One more significant size project completed in July involved the waterproofing of two double-bay elevator pits in a mid-rise residential building located on Bronte St. S in Milton. To ensure lasting results, cold joints were repaired, and the pits were coated, including an upturn around the entire perimeter.
Repair Method
Cold Joint Waterproofing
Cold joints, which are weak areas where two concrete slabs meet (such as the walls and floor), were thoroughly waterproofed around the entire pit. This step was crucial, as leaks often occur in these areas. To fully seal the cold joints, a continuous patch was installed at a 45-degree angle along the joints, providing a robust barrier against water ingress.
Polyaspartic Coating Application
Cold joint waterproofing was followed by a polyaspartic coating, which included a color pigment. This coating was applied to both the floor and part of the walls (a two-foot upturn), ensuring comprehensive coverage. Polyaspartic coating fully seals any surface it is applied to, offering a long-lasting protective layer essential for maintaining the integrity of the elevator pit.
Why Use Polyaspartic Coatings for Elevator Pit Waterproofing
Polyaspartic coatings offer several key benefits for elevator pit waterproofing. They provide exceptional resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations, ensuring the coated surfaces remain durable and effective over time. The quick curing time of polyaspartic coatings allows for faster project completion, minimizing elevator lockout time. Additionally, their superior adhesion and flexibility help accommodate structural movements and vibrations, which are common in elevator pits. Overall, polyaspartic coatings deliver a reliable and long-lasting solution for waterproofing elevator pits, protecting them from potential water damage and extending their service life.
By implementing this repair method, we provided a durable solution to prevent future leaks and protect the elevator equipment from potential damage.
